Avoid My Mistake: A Story to Save You Time & Money
A while ago, as I was working with one of the many Solo Ad Vendors on Udimi - a platform for purchasing email traffic to promote digital products—I decided to try out an additional service they offered. The vendor promised to craft 30–40 email swipes for my campaign, assuring me that I "wouldn't have to lift a finger." Hoping to save time, I agreed—and even granted them access to my autoresponder.
Long story short, I wasted both time and money. The email swipes were poorly written, clearly outsourced from overseas—specifically, from the other side of the Himalayan mountains—and riddled with misleading content that made me cringe. When I saw the final service, I was completely dissatisfied and had no choice but to rewrite every single email myself.
Here are just a few of the original email swipes they created under my name, so you can see exactly what I mean:

I found my autoresponder overloaded with 40 email swipes like these—all of them aggressively pitching in every single email. I don't like aggressive pitching emails and I don't think I ever did.
As you can see, these emails completely misrepresented me. If I had been the recipient, I would have instantly lost trust and unsubscribed.
Wouldn’t you?
This frustrating experience taught me a valuable lesson—never trust anyone who promises flawless results. It also triggered me to start writing my email series by myself, which, in turn, helped sharpen my writing and communication skills. That experience ultimately led me to write posts like this one too.
Key Takeaway: Beware of anyone who claims, “You won’t have to lift a finger,” or makes bold promises, like the Russian idiom “сделаем дело в срок железо-бетонно” (roughly translating to “we’ll deliver on time, ironclad guarantee”). These statements are red flags. Stay alert, or better yet, walk away before they waste your time and money.
Lesson learnt.

Let’s talk about email marketing
Email Still Works (When You Do It Right)
Email marketing isn't about blasting links or leaning on hype. It’s about building trust—one message at a time.
When done right, email becomes:
• A feedback loop with your audience
• A controlled communication channel (no algorithms here)
• A testing ground for new ideas, offers, or hooks
• A long-term asset, not a one-time tactic
But like any tool, email marketing can backfire if used the wrong way—like outsourcing poor copy or ignoring your audience’s expectations.
Your Role as a Brand Builder
If you’re:
• A solopreneur writing emails from scratch
• A business owner delegating campaigns
• A marketer testing what sticks
...then your job is to treat your email list like a conversation, not a billboard.
This means:
• Writing like a real person (not a template)
• Prioritizing relevance over reach
• Understanding that value builds over time—not in one promo blast
Common Mistakes (And What to Do Instead)
Let’s take the lessons from my earlier experience and turn them into clear do's and don’ts:
What Happens | What to Do Instead | |
Using Done-For-You Aggressive Email Pitches | Low engagement, unsubscribes | Customize tone + content to match your voice |
Delegating blindly | Poor quality control | Always review outsourced product/service |
Making big promises | Breaks trust | Focus on real outcomes you can stand behind |
Ignoring your audience's interests | Emails get ignored | Segment your list and write for them |
The Framework That Works
Every successful email campaign answers three questions:
1. Who am I helping?
→ Get specific. Know your reader’s pain points.
2. What’s the goal of this email?
→ Is it nurturing, promoting, or educating?
3. Why now?
→ Give a clear reason to act or engage today.
